In this week we practice with the energy of Hurry, Anxiety and Restlessness.

The energy of Hurry, Anxiety often causes us to run from the morning alarm clock until we wearily get into bed, sometimes even into dreams!

Hurry will be our best friend precisely because it will remind us that we are free in every moment to be well, to stop for a moment take a deep breath. Let us begin now to give ourselves that respect, that affection that creates toward ourselves a relationship of deep friendship; this is how we can put the foundation for a healthy relationship with others.

Let us give ourselves moments of pause, moments of friendship, moments of play and intimacy with ourselves. A minute or even a single breath is a precious gift that interrupts the anxiety that rides our days and reminds us that, at the heart of rest, there is a place of peace that we can access at any time, a place that no one can give us and no one can take away from us.

This week

Our practice with the energy of hurry

  • Appointment. I make an appointment for the next time I am in the energy of hurry/anxiety.
  • Recognition. I suddenly come out of oblivion and recognize that I am in the energy of hurry/anxiety.
  • Exploration. While continuing to be guided by the energy of hurry, I begin to explore it. What is it like, where is it? What is the general feeling, how am I? Where is the hurry in the body? Is it a contraction, a pressure, a torsion? Often waking up in this state of mind I have the feeling of being behind where I should be, of running behind, of being followed.
  • Can I be okay right now? In this moment can I slow down or stop, relax and then adopt a step, a rhythm, in which I can feel comfortable, in which I can allow myself to breathe, or should I continue to remain in discomfort, in anxiety? I sincerely ask myself this question, without taking the answer for granted, and I listen.
  • Yes, I can stop, take a breath.... No, I can’t stop, I’ll be fine later, now I can’t…. When the answer is no, I listen deeply to the voice inside me explaining that I can’t slow down or rest, I can’t be okay now, later… later not now. We can see how often (not to say always) there is an idea behind the mind’s arguments, an idea that erases the discomfort. Perhaps we might discover an idea so deep-rooted, so close to our noses as to be invisible. An idea that many times is linked to a role: good son, daughter, good father, mother, monk, priest, Christian, atheist, good person, honest citizen, practical person, spiritual or good sense person, vegetarian, vegan, crudist .…

Hurry

by Thich Nhat Hanh

The energy of negative habits is always trying to come up, but through mental presence, you will be able to recognize it.
Mindfulness helps us recognize the habits that our ancestors and parents passed on to us, or that we assimilated in childhood.
Often, just recognizing them causes them to loosen their grip.
Suppose you have a habit of the to be in hurry when doing things like cooking or shopping. Through awareness, you can recognize that you go from one thing to another hastily, trying to finish as soon as possible.
Then you realize that the energy of rushing has manifested.
Then you inhale and exhale, and say, “My dear energy of habit, here you are again.” And as soon as you recognize it, it loses its force.
Then it comes back again, you do the same, and she will continue to lose her strength.
You do not need to fight it, but only recognize it and smile at it. Each time you acknowledge it, it will become a little weaker, until eventually it can no longer have any control over you.
